New Trends in Metal Buildings

Oct 3, 2026

With more than 40 years of experience manufacturing metal buildings, we at Vulcan Steel Structures have seen trends come and go. Thanks to modern elements, customers have more customization options than ever before. Some of the biggest trends we are seeing in 2026 are modern spins on classic features, including designs that prioritize sustainability, future expansion, and special use spaces. Let’s take a closer look!

Disaster-ready structures

Year after year, metal buildings are proving they are the superior choice for above-ground storm shelters. Tough water- and heat-resistant materials help these buildings stand up to strong winds, driving rain, and other harsh conditions. Modular designs make repairs quick and affordable compared to other forms of construction. That’s why metal buildings have become a popular choice for community storm shelters, and why we expect this trend to continue.

Sustainability and energy efficiency

Often made from recycled steel, metal buildings are largely recyclable in the event they are demolished or sections are replaced during repairs. In 2022, the MBMA stated that at least 70% of a metal building is produced from recycled steel.1 High R-Value Insulation Systems such as Long Tab Banded Systems, Simple Saver Systems, and Insulated metal panels (IMPs) improve energy efficiency and increase occupant comfort, placing less strain on a facility’s HVAC system and minimizing heating and cooling costs. Metal Roofs are the ideal substrate to support solar arrays, providing both clean energy and savings on your energy bill. Energy efficiency and sustainability will continue to be essential in metal building design.

Fit today’s budget, plan for tomorrow’s success

Another major construction trend in metal buildings takes advantage of expandable designs. By designing your building from the start to accommodate expansion down the line, you can make a building expansion a breeze. Metal building systems offer the unique ability to build what you can afford today while keeping your options open for future growth. Expansion-ready components, removable endwalls, and other elements make it possible for your metal building to grow as your company grows.

Deep, earthy tones and specialty panels

Visually, dark, warm colors have increased in popularity. The 1970’s were famous for their baby-blue buildings, then Polar White took the market by storm, but today dark green, brown, and gray hues are common colors we see people select for the exterior of their buildings to add warmth and make a structure more inviting. Beyond traditional coated IMPs, accent panels—like our wood-grain soffit panels—are design elements that are increasing in demand. Along with masonry facades, these types of panels completely transform a building’s aesthetic.

From new color hues to sustainability to future expansion and disaster-ready capabilities, the metal building industry continues to evolve, allowing for greater customization than ever before. And this is only a slice of what we have to offer. When you work with Vulcan Steel Structures, you have access to a wide range of elements and features, guided by experts who will help you design the perfect building.
